Deciding to live in Canada
Deciding to live in Canada might be the first fundamental step, but the realization of this goal may not come easy as there are many immigration options to choose from. One of the immigration pathways to consider is through Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) wherein provinces across the country may invite immigration candidates to apply for a provincial nomination for Canadian permanent residence. The PNP is designed for workers who have the essential skills, education and work experience which can contribute to the economy of a specific province or territory within Canada. It aims to attract skilled workers to settle and live in that particular province or territory and become permanent residents of Canada. Each province or territory operates its own immigration programs which are designed to meet their specific needs and may target workers with Canadian work experience, students with a Canadian education, highly skilled workers, businessmen or semi-skilled workers.

How does it work? Depending on which stream you are applying to, the process may either go through a paper-based channel or an online application through the Express Entry Program.
Paper-based Process
In this process, prospective nominees must apply directly to the province or territory for nomination under any of the non-express entry aligned streams. You need to meet the eligibility requirements of that particular province. Once all the requirements have been satisfied, the province issues the nomination. After being nominated, you then submit a paper application for permanent residence to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Processing times under this route though are longer compared to the express entry pathway.
Express Entry Process
The express entry is an online process where you can either:
- Apply for nomination in the province or territory you want to live in under their express entry compatible streams and secure a nomination from that province. Afterward, you can create an express entry profile and show that you have been nominated; or
- You can create an express entry profile at once and signify your intention to live in provinces or territories you are interested in. If a province or territory sends you a “notification of interest”, you may contact them directly and apply for nomination. Once nominated, the province will offer it to you through your account and you have to accept it electronically and then submit an electronic application to the IRCC.
Choosing a Province or Territory
Each province or territory has its own eligibility requirements which can be viewed on their respective websites. The suitability standards vary from time and time and changes are being introduced depending on the need of each province or territory. Immigration options through PNP can be overwhelming and may appear complicated as there are many streams to choose from and varying requirements to comply with.
