If you are outside Canada and wants to visit your relatives here, or if you have a relative or a friend who wants to visit you here in Canada, these are the things you must look out for when you intend to lodge a Visitor Visa Application:

  • Before applying for a Visitor’s Visa, you would need to give a reason why you want to visit Canada and prove to them that you are just visiting Canada. It’s either you are visiting a friend, a family, or even visiting for a business trip.
  • You should give reasons why you need to go back to your home country. Family responsibilities and resulting financial obligations are important factors. What comes into play is the establishment of home ties i.e., where immediate family members live
  • Although sometimes links to one’s home country can be a challenge under some situations, the visitor visa applicant must specifically define his or her status in his or her home country, financially and otherwise. For example, is there an ill relative being cared for by the applicant? Is there a major initiative at work coming up? Why is this information essential? These paper/online programs must come to life and in-person interviews are rarely required.
  • It must be made clear that the claimant has a life back in his or her home country to return to.

To be eligible, the applicant must meet the basic requirements to get a Visitor Visa and the most important requirements are:

  • Passport (should be at least 6 months valid);
  • No Criminal or Immigration-related convictions;
  • Must convince the immigration officer that you have a life to go back to, with ties to your home country and that you also will leave at the end of your visit in Canada; and
  • Have enough money for your living expenses.

In Canada, most tourists can stay for up to 6 months. The Border Services Officer may allow you to stay at the port of entry for less or more than 6 months. If so, they’ll put in your passport the date when you need to leave. They could also provide you with a document called a visitor record, showing the date when you need to leave. If you don’t get a stamp on your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you enter Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
